June 2007: After 30 years, ceramic artist Marion Waldo McChesney, the Pawlet Potter, has moved! The new studio is five miles from Pawlet Center toward Danby Four Corners on Lilly Hill Road, a dirt road with very little traffic.

McChesney has long been an advocate of "Reuse, Recycle, Renew" and her new space is a reflection of this. Built on an existing foundation with water/septic/electric already in place, many of its elements come from years of collecting "treasures": windows from the Pawlet fireman's auction, the antique front door from a yard sale, counters and sink from a local kitchen renovation, a beautiful faucet from RK Miles sidewalk sale, and windows and doors from alongside the road and occasionally in a dumpster. Some of her favorite pieces came from the Station restaurant renovation when it became Pascal's. "I love being surrounded by the bits of history all these pieces bring".

The new studio is a big open space with the showroom at the south end soaking up the sun from the huge window-wall. Visitors can browse and chat with McChesney while she works in the adjacent studio. Beautiful wall brackets, made by local iron craftsman Clint Eirmann, hold up the thick hundred-year-old plank shelves that were moved from the old studio.

"I had a lot of trepidation about moving. Three decades and countless visitors bring a very strong emotional attachment to a place, and my old studio was a special one indeed. What has surprised me is the inspiration I feel in the new space. And my feet will be a lot warmer too." She's now anxious to share this new space, and open her doors to old and new friends alike.

"I expect my work will change in this very different setting - just how, remains to be seen."

My working studio is open to the public. I do encourage people to visit. I expect to be there a lot, however I recommend calling first. I thoroughly enjoy sharing the space and the process with visitors - a mini education and a look behind the scenes!

My studio is open by chance or appointment.
